SunBlock Systems Traces Anonymous CDs Back to Disgruntled Former Employee

The Client

A large equipment manufacturer

The Scenario

The president of a competitor company informed the client that a computer CDR containing the client company's customer lists, customer equipment order information, and internal pricing models and details was mailed to him. The disc was accompanied by a typewritten note indicating malice toward the client's corporate leadership. Later that day, another competitor called to indicate that they had also received a disc.

The Investigation

Using forensic techniques, SunBlock analyzed the rogue CDs. SunBlock investigators recovered data previously written to the CD, including:

• Computer hardware/software configuration information
• Recordable CD creation details
• A data fragment with a login ID for an Internet site

Once SunBlock recovered the login ID, the client immediately recognized the name as belonging to a former employee involved in litigation with the company. The CDs and all recovered evidence were handed over to law enforcement and an arrest warrant was issued.
